Overview

The USB-to-Serial Adapter is your fast solution to utilize the peripheral with Serial Port in an easy-to-use environment such as plug-n-play and hot swaps function. This cable provides ideal connection to the Shift-Light GP. It can also be used to connect to other equipment as data loggers, modems, PDA, etc.

System Requirements

Before you use the USB to Serial Bridge Cable, make sure your computer is an IBM PC-compatible with the following minimum system requirements:

  • Intel-compatible Pentium I CPU or higher
  • One standard USB port (4-pin) and has the symbol jj (*)
  • Either the following operating systems:
  • Windows 2003, Windows XP
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows 98, Windows 98 SE

(*) if no free USB is available, use an USB-HUB to add USB ports to your system. These USB-Hubs are available from your PC reseller.

We have some extra drivers available, but these are supplied to you "as-is". These drivers are NOT supported by BITS!

For backup and compatibility problems, the previous release of the Windows XP driver is available:

Installation Windows XP / Windows 2003

Follow the steps below on installing the USB-to-Serial Adapter for the first time:

  1. Do not plug in the USB-to-Serial adapter (yet)!
  2. Power up your computer where you will connect the USB-to-Serial Adapter. Make sure that the USB port is enabled and working properly.
  3. Log in as administrator or as a user with administrator equivalent privileges. This is important since you will be installing new drives/files into directors where normal users have no access to.
  4. Download the drivers "Divers for Windows XP, Windows 2003" in de Software / Driver section. Put the file (temporarily) onto the Desktop.
  5. Double click (execute) the downloaded file: usb2serial_driver_installer.exe. The following screen will be displayed:

  1. Click Next to continue
    Now all nesserary files for the USB-to-Serial Adapter are installed onto your computer.

  1. After the file installation you are prompted to plug in the USB-to-Serial adapter:

  1. Now (!) plug in the USB-to-Serial Adapter cable into the USB port. Click OK. Windows will detect an USB Device (you hear a new device sound), enumerate the device; it is now ready for use.

In the 'Device Manager' you can check the newly installed device in the 'Ports (COM & LPT) section. If necessary, you can also change the Com Port number here (for example from COM4 to COM6).

Installation Windows 2000 / Windows 98 / Windows ME

Follow the steps below on installing the USB-to-Serial Adapter for the first time:

  1. Power up your computer where you will connect the USB-to-Serial Adapter. Make sure that the USB port is enabled and working properly.
  2. Download the drivers "Drivers for Windows 2000, 98, ME" in de Software / Driver section. Unzip this file to a temporary folder (directory) onto your hard disk, for example C:\tmp.
  3. Plug in the USB-to-Serial Adapter cable into the USB port and Windows will detect an USB Device and run the Add New Hardware Wizard to assist you in setting up the new USB Composite Device.

  1. Click Next to continue:
  2. Select Search for the best driver for your device and click Next.
  3. Select Specify a location and click Browse. Change the folder to the folder where you unzipped the drivers (in the example C:\tmp) and click OK.
  4. Double check the directory that Windows prompts. Click Next.
  5. Windows will detect the driver (serwpl.inf) and shows the USB-to-Serial Adapter. Click NEXT to continue until installation is complete.
  6. Click Next to continue and let Windows copy the needed files to your hard disk. Click Finish while installation is complete.

After installing, the System will generate an additional COM Port, USB-to-Serial Port (COM3) (*) for the connection to RS232 Serial Device. You can check this in the 'System Properties'.

(*) in this case COM3 is the first free available Com Port number. If you have more serial posts in your computer, this number will be higher.
